Interment will be in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery under the direction of Marshall Funeral Home of Alva. Face masks will be required at the service. The service will be live streamed on Marshall Funeral Home Facebook page. Lavon Marian Wiersig, daughter of the late Albert and Edith (Thomas) Hazen, was born January 21, 1941, in Protection, Kansas, and entered into eternal life November 28, 2020, at Alva, Oklahoma, at the age of 79 years, 10 months, and 7 days. She was raised by her parents on a farm southwest of Protection with her twin sister and five other siblings. Lavon had so much fun growing up as a twin. Lavon graduated from Protection High School in 1959. She received her Bachelors and Maters Degrees in Education from Northwestern Oklahoma State University as well as her Reading Specialist. On December 26, 1965, she was united in marriage to Virgil Wiersig. One son, Kurtis Todd was born to this marriage. Lavon taught second grade in Garden City, Kansas for three years from 1963 to 1966. She was married the last year she taught there and she and her husband moved to Alva. She was hired to teach in the Alva Schools in 1966 and taught 34 more years at Lincoln, Washington, and Longfellow Schools. Her greatest reward was being named Alva and Woods County Teacher of the Year. Lavon loved teaching and felt as though her students were her kids. She followed them through school and was interested in their life goals. She was a devoted member of the Zion Lutheran Church. She was a member of Ruth Circle and LWML. She had taught Sunday School and Bible School. She and Virgil were sponsors of the Lutheran Youth Group for many years and served on the Altar Guild. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and the Retired Teachers of Woods County. She and Virgil enjoyed playing in a card group. She enjoyed decorating their home for the holidays, bird watching and tending her flowers in her yard. Grandmother Lavon tried to go to all the sports activities, school programs and church events. She loved keeping her grandsons and helping them bake goodies. She loved cooking for her family and for the holidays. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death two brothers, Eugene and Ora Lee; her sister, Irene Ross, her sister-in-law, Dixie Hazen, and brothers-in-law, Jack Anderson and Earl Webster. Lavon is survived by her loving husband, Virgil; one son, Kurtis Wiersig and significant other, Sandy; three grandsons, Cole Adler, Hagan Asher, and Griffin Arrick; her twin sister, Lavona Hobson, two other sisters, Lila Webster and Melva Anderson; a brother-in-law, Al Hobson, other relatives and many friends. Lavon was a very faithful servant for the Lord and a very good friend to many people. She will be deeply missed, but is truly now in a heavenly place without pain or suffering. Memorial contributions may be made through the funeral home to the Zion Lutheran Church, the NWOSU Foundation, or the Alva Goldbug Foundation (checks for the Goldbug Foundation must be made payable to CFO).
