Joy Melody Haltom

Funeral services for Joy Haltom will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 4, 2024, at the Alva Wesleyan Church with Pastor Paul Kirk officiating. Burial will follow in the Alva Municipal Cemetery under the direction of Marshall Funeral Home of Alva. There will be a visitation with family present Tuesday from 5-7:00 p.m. Joy Melody, daughter of Bernard Darold and Arleen Loreen (Prins) Thorne, was born March 20, 1959, at Primghar, Iowa, and passed away August 30, 2024, in Oklahoma City surrounded by her family at the age of 65 years, 5 months, and 10 days. Joy attended school and graduated from Bentonville High School in Bentonville, Arkansas, and later received her Bachelors Degree in Business Administration from Bartlesville Wesleyan College. She began her career in Banking in the Records Department and later as a Finance Manager at First National Bank in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. She met her future husband, Dennis Haltom, while working at the bank. After college, Joy moved back to Arkansas, continuing for a time to work in banking and later making a career change to insurance. Dennis remained in contact with Joy and they began a relationship where it didn’t take long before he realized she was the one for him. They were united in marriage on November 12, 1983, in Rogers, Arkansas. They made their home in Bartlesville and later in Indiana before moving back to Oklahoma where they raised their family on the farm outside of Hopeton. She was a member of the Alva Wesleyan Church. While her kids were small, she stayed with them and started an at home business called “Lamb’s Baa-tique” where she crafted purses, bags and women’s apparel traveling to large wholesale shows and the Dallas World Trade Center. After all her children were of school age, she went back into insurance and started her own agency, Haltom Insurance Agency. Joy enjoyed connecting with people through her business ventures and advising people in the many challenges they were facing whether business or personal related. Joy enjoyed reading, being involved in church activities, attending her kids and grandkids events and helping Dennis on the farm. Her biggest joy was being with her grandkids and making sure they received plenty of “Care Packages” from Nana. Besides her father, Bernard Thorne, she was preceded in death by her sister, Jo McDermott. Joy is survived by her husband of almost 41 years, Dennis Haltom of rural Alva; her daughters, Hannah Haltom and Clayton Roberts of Cherokee, Krista Prieto and husband, David, of Fullerton, California, and Marva Lindsay and husband, Justin, of Babb, Montana; sons, Seth Haltom and wife, Claudia, of Alva, and Daniel Haltom and Kristyn Kasner of Rockford, Illinois; her mother, Arleen Thorne of Alva; her brother, John Thorne and wife, Robyn of Seiling; eight grandchildren, Arianna and Ezra Scott of Cherokee, Carlee and Kade Roberts of Cherokee, Kalina and Kelilah Prieto of Fullerton, California, and Sofia and Miguel Haltom of Alva; many other relatives and friends. Memorial contributions may be made through the funeral home to the Wesleyan Church Youth and Kids Ministry.
